DL police officer placed on leave after allegedly punching convicted criminal while off duty
A Detroit Lakes officer is on paid administrative leave after allegedly punching a man he's arrested a couple times in the past.
Blake Sundvor (aka Blake Mastin), of Frazee, alleges he was punched by Detroit Lakes Police Sergeant Robert Strand at the Hub 41 restaurant in Detroit Lakes on Dec. 23 when Strand was off duty. An investigation is being led by Clay County to determine the validity of Sundvor's claims or what led up to the alleged punch.
"We don't have all the facts right now," said Detroit Lakes Police Chief Steve Todd, adding, "it's important that we all understand the officer involved is entitled to due process."
According to the Becker County Attorney's Office, as of Monday, no charges have been filed against Strand, an investigator for the department.
Sundvor, the alleged victim in the case, has been convicted of several scams in Becker County and also duped a Twin Cities TV station into doing a story on him after he falsely claimed to be the one who figured out how to cap the massive 2010 BP spill on the gulf coast.
It's unknown how long Strand will be on administrative leave.
