Township Officers Meeting: The Becker County Association of Township Officers will meet at 7 p.m. in the third floor jury assembly room at the Becker County Courthouse. Registration starts at 6:30 p.m.

Thursday, April 26

United Way Celebration of Heroes: The United Way of Becker County will host its 2018 Celebration of Heroes starting at 5 p.m. inside the Holiday Inn Lakeside, 1155 Highway 10 East, Detroit Lakes. Various community service awards will be presented, including Everyday Heroes (adult and youth), Community Spirit (business and individual), and the Bob and Michelle Harris Memorial Award.Those planning to attend are asked to RSVP by sending an email to luannp@rmcep.com no later than Monday, April 23; though there is no admission charge, an accurate headcount is needed.

Community Schools Engagement Meeting: There will be a community engagement meeting about current plans for updating the facilities at Detroit Lakes Public Schools starting at 6 p.m. inside the Callaway Event Center. As with the prior community meetings, Brian Berg from Zerr-Berg Architects will provide a presentation on the referendum process to date and allow for community input and questions.

Saturday, April 28

Bike Rodeo: Detroit Lakes' 8th Annual Bike Rodeo will be held at Kent Freeman Sports Arena, 1300 Rossman Ave., from 9:30 a.m. to noon. This event is free and open to all ages, targeting children in grades K-8 with parental participation encouraged. Complete the bike rodeo to enter a drawing for the chance to win a new bike! Learn safety skills while having fun riding in a bike rodeo course. Bike helmets will also be given out to participants.

Rick's Ride Benefit: A benefit for Rick Olson, including a comedy show, dinner, bake sale and silent auction, will take place from 4 to 8 p.m. at the American Legion in Lake Park. All proceeds will go to help Rick and his wife Janet with financing for their handicap accessible van.

St. Peter's Rummage and Plant Sale: St. Peter's Lutheran Church of Audubon will host its annual rummage and plant sale from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., featuring coffee, barbecues, bars and homemade doughnuts to snack on as well as clothing, dishes, furniture and of course, lots of plants. Please use the church's south door for entry.

St. Peter's Fish Dinner: St. Peter's Lutheran Church of Audubon will host an all-you-can-eat fish dinner from 4 to 7 p.m. Admission is a free will offering.

Wild Game Feed: Lake Eunice Evangelical Free Church, located at 12986 County Highway 15, Detroit Lakes, will host a wild game feed at 5:30 p.m. Those planning to attend are asked to RSVP in advance by calling 218-439-3255 and leaving a message with your name and the number of people in your group. Admission is a free will offering.

Wednesday, May 2

Spring Cleanup at Tamarac: Volunteers will help spruce up Tamarac, starting at 8:30 a.m. with litter pick up along roadsides, landscaping projects, visitor center touch ups and more. Lunch is provided so please register by calling the refuge at 218-847-2641. Note date change; this event was originally scheduled for April 26.

Thursday, May 3

Week of the Young Child Powwow: The 2nd Annual Week of the Young Child Powwow is set to take place from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Detroit Lakes Middle School. There will be a feast at 5 p.m., followed by the Grand Entry at 7 p.m.; there will also be a variety of demonstrations from 5 to 8 p.m. All dancers welcome; regalia is not necessary, and there will be some fancy shawls and other dress items available for kids to use. This event is free and open to the public.

Friday, May 4

Talk of the Town: The first "Talk of the Town" event of summer 2018 is set for 9 a.m. at the Cormorant Community Center. Enjoy free coffee and cookies while listening to special guest speaker Brad Laabs talk about his work as an expert fishing guide.

Angel of Remembrance Dinner: A fundraising dinner to benefit the Angel of Remembrance statue and healing garden project at Essentia Health St. Mary's Hospital is set to get underway with a 5 p.m. social at the Lake Park American Legion (2051 Second St., Lake Park), followed by a catered dinner of chicken and ribs with all the fixings (and angel food cake for dessert) starting at 6 p.m. There will also be a silent auction and door prizes. Tickets are $20 and may be purchased at the Essentia Health St. Mary's Gift Shop in Detroit Lakes or Hair It Is in Lake Park. Pancake breakfast: The local Knights of Columbus will be sponsoring a pancake, French toast and sausage breakfast from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Holy Rosary Parish Center, 1043 Lake Ave., Detroit Lakes. Admission is a free will donation.

ABE Orientation: Detroit Lakes Adult Basic Education is offering a two-day orientation for those wanting to enroll in GED or Adult Diploma classes. Orientation dates are April 25-26. Call 218-844-5760 to register or stop by the ABE office at M State-Detroit Lakes.

Spring Rummage Sale: Grace Lutheran Church, located at 213 Roosevelt Ave., Detroit Lakes, will host a spring rummage sale from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 4 and 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 5. Friday's sale will include a light supper of barbecue sandwiches, chips and lemonade, while Saturday's event will include fresh rolls and coffee. Free will offering for most sale items. Tai Chi Chih Classes: Free outdoor drop-in practices for learning T'ai Chi Chih will be held every Monday and Friday, May 4-June 29 at the United Methodist Church Memorial Garden, 885 Pembina Trail, Detroit Lakes. Plant, Pest & Gardening Clinics: The Becker County Master Gardeners will once again be hosting their Plant, Pest & Gardening Clinics this month at the local University of Minnesota Extension office, 1120 Eighth St. SE, Detroit Lakes, from 9 a.m. to noon on May 7, 14, 21, and 29 (the office will be closed for Memorial Day on May 28). Shepherd of the Lakes Sunday Worship: Shepherd of the Lakes Lutheran Church (LCMC) is now hosting Sunday worship services in Suite 15 of the Washington Square Mall, 808 Washington Ave., Detroit Lakes, starting at 10 a.m. each Sunday. Fellowship with coffee and rolls will follow the service.

TOPS meetings: Take Off Pounds Sensibly members help each other stay on track to their weight loss goal. No diets, no food to buy and no workouts to follow. Visitors and new members are always welcome. Minnesota TOPS Chapter 30 meets Mondays in Trinity Lutheran Church choir room in Detroit Lakes. Weigh in is at 4:15 p.m., followed by meeting at 4:30. TOPS Chapter 940 meets on Thursdays at 9 a.m., also at Trinity Lutheran. TOPS 1251 of Lake Park meets every Tuesday at the Lake Park Lutheran Church, with weigh-in starting at 12 noon, followed by the meeting at 12:30. L.A. Moms group: Lakes Area (L.A.) Moms is designed to nurture every mother. At our L.A. Moms group, you will have a chance to socialize with other moms, hear some great teaching, have discussion time and participate in creative activities. L.A. Community Alliance Church programs: Community Alliance Church, Detroit Lakes, hosts Quilting for Missions Mondays at 9:30 a.m.; The first Tuesday of every month is High Mileage (suggested ages 55 and up), which meets for "pot-blessing" meal at noon, followed by special music and a Bible nugget.

Bone Builders: An exercise class for seniors called "Bone Builders" is being held at 405 W. Maple Ave. in Frazee, Thursday mornings at 10:30 a.m.; the Lake Park City Center every Tuesday and Friday at 10:15 a.m.; and also at the Vergas Event Center, Thursdays at 9:30.a.m. The group focuses on low-impact and balance exercises.

Alzheimer's Support Group: Meets on the 2nd Tuesday of every month at 2 p.m. in the Yoga Studio at Ecumen Detroit Lakes.

Dunvilla Lions Club: The Dunvilla Lions Club will meet the 3rd Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m. at the Dunn Township Hall.

Free hot meal: Stop into the Refuge every Thursday and Friday evening for a hot meal served from 5 to 6:30 p.m. All are welcome. The Refuge is located at 921 8th Street SE in Detroit Lakes.

Be a foster grandparent: For those 55 and older interested in being a foster grandparent through the Tri-Valley Opportunity Council program, call 1-800-584-7020 or visit www.tvoc.org.

The Caring Cup: Every second and last Wednesday of the month from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., community members who are dealing with the loss of a loved one meet at the David-Donehower Funeral Home for friendship, support and encouragement. The free program is open to the public, no registration necessary.

Women's Domestic Violence Education Support Group: Lakes Crisis & Resource Center hosts a Women's Domestic Violence Education Support Group every Wednesday from 5:30—6:30 p.m. in the crisis center. Call to pre-register at 218-847-8572 or 218-847-7446. Childcare is available upon request.

Rummikub, more games: Tuesday afternoons from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., come to Holy Rosary fireplace room for coffee, desserts and a game of cards, board games or Rummikub. Everyone is welcome.

BC Senior Meals: Meals for persons 60 and older are served several times each week at nutrition sites in Detroit Lakes, Lake Park, Osage and Wolf Lake or can be delivered directly to homes in these communities, Frazee and Callaway, via the Meals on Wheels program. One-day advance notice of attendance is required at many sites. Caregiver discussion group: A caregiver discussion group is held the first Tuesday of the month at 9:30 a.m. in Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Detroit Lakes. Are you caring for a friend or family member age 60 or older? Join other caregivers for education, sharing, problem-solving and refreshments. Facilitated by Lutheran Social Services of Minnesota. Lakes Area Quilt Guild: The Lakes Area Quilt Guild meets every 4th Thursday at 7 pm at Ecumen in Detroit Lakes, Emmanuel Nursing Home in the Forest Conference Center. Check us out on Facebook! All levels of quilters, new and experienced are welcome to attend.

Preschool screening: Preschool screening for 3-5 year olds for the Frazee-Vergas district is provided through Becker County Community Health Services. Call Annie at 218-847-5628 ext. 5419 to make an appointment. This one screening will provide your child the requirements for Early Childhood Screening. Minnesota law requires each child attend a health and developmental screening before kindergarten.

Senior Center Activities: The DL Senior Citizens Center has activities all month long. Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. is Pinochle; at 1 p.m. there will be 500 and other games. Whist is played on Thursdays at 9:30 a.m. The third Wednesday of each month will be a celebration of birthdays for the month. The second Monday of each month there will be a Site Council meeting at 11 a.m. For more information, call 847-5823.

Bingo for DL Hockey: The DL Youth Hockey organization holds Bingo every Sunday at Zorbaz in support of youth hockey in Detroit Lakes. All are welcome; Bingo starts at 6 p.m.

Eagles Pinochle: Every Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. there will be pinochle at the Eagles Club located at 112 West Holmes Street in Detroit Lakes. Members, guests and friends welcome. For questions call Gordy Martinson at 218-841-2940.

Birthing class: Essentia Health St. Mary's hosts childbirth preparation classes for expectant mothers in their sixth to seventh month of pregnancy. Topics include Labor & Delivery, Cesarean Birth, Role of the Labor Companion, Newborn Care, Unexpected Outcomes, Breast & Bottle Feeding, Postpartum Period, Breathing Patterns & Relaxation Techniques.
